About Cyprus
Cyprus is an island divided in to two halves, the North and the South sides. The Northern side is Turkish and the southern side is Greek. The island is separated by the green line that runs through the capital city, Nicosia. The green line is a demilitarized zone maintained by the United Nations. Nicosia (Turkish: Lefkosa, Greek: Lefkosia) is the capital of Cyprus and is currently the only divided capital in the world.
Cyprus has a very long history that goes back more than 9000 years. The island has many historical sites to visit so the islands history can be fully appreciated by the visitor. Cyprus is the third largest island situated in the north eastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea. The geography of North Cyprus is characterized by mountains, plains and beaches. Cyprus has one of the most clean and unspoilt sandy beaches in the world which 25% of the Green Turtles of the Mediterranean visit to lay their eggs during the months of July and August.
While in visiting Cyprus, you will need transportation to get around. There are bus and taxi services and many good car hire companies.
Your experience of Cyprus can be as varied and rewarding as the geography of the island itself. Starting with the sea: There are beaches in Cyprus to suit just about everybody, from families with small children to seekers of solitude. The mountainous interior, the Troodos, offers an alluring contrast to the coast that shouldn’t be overlooked. Bracing pine-scented air, hiking trails and Byzantine churches are just some of the treasures to be found here. It is also possible to experience firsthand the village life of the hill towns. By the beach or further afield, in the towns or storied countryside, the distinctive culture of Cyprus is always close at hand.
Cyprus has a very high standard of health and medical services. Hospitals, private clinics and medical centers are equipped with the latest facilities. Most places have English speaking doctors or translators.
As a Mediterranean island with a varied and sometimes rugged terrain, Cyprus lends itself to soft adventure holidays that involve activities as diverse as hiking, mountain biking, jeep excursions and bird watching. In Cyprus one can also involve themselves in various aviation sports such as gliding, parachute jumping, hang-gliding and aeromodelling. Very few countries in the world are blessed by such favourable climate conditions which provide ample diversity in sea-sports enjoyment such as sub-aqua diving, water skiing, wind-surfing, sailing, canoeing, pedaloing, parachuting, yachting, etc
A vacation in Cyprus is richly rewarding for those passionate about Mediterranean cuisine, history and archaeology.
